Gudjal People

For tens of thousands of years, the ancestors of the Gudjal people (pronounced Goodjal) have lived on and cared for their Country in this Region. For the Aboriginal community, the land holds deep spiritual significance. Gudjal people lived throughout the area, particularly along the Burdekin and Broughton Rivers, across the basalt country and its lagoons, and westward to the magnificent White Mountains National Park. While the Gudjal people have always called this Region home, many other Aboriginal groups have also lived in and travelled through the area, maintaining connections not only to the physical landscape but also to its spiritual dimensions.

Gudjal Country shares borders with the Gugu Badhun, Yirandali, and Jangga peoples, with whom strong cultural connections endure. Historically, the rich landscapes and permanent water sources across the Charters Towers Region supported a significant Indigenous population prior to European settlement. Today, the shared commitment to caring for the land—held by both Traditional Owners and pastoralists—remains vital for environmental sustainability. The Traditional Owners of the Region believe that protecting the land is essential to safeguarding the natural and cultural values of their homelands.
